paula scher analysis

paula scher has a long standing relationship with the public theatre in new york, for whom she regularly designs play posters for. In this case, most notably the 95/96 season piece, which challenged the principals and constraints of theatrical promotion at the time.

for 'bring in da noise, bring in da funk' scher incorporated unpopular fonts, with questionable kerning and font size choices which she formed using wooden cut outs and later revealed was inspired by street art and graffitti typography. on top of this, paula also used a monochrome silhouetted photo, which was one of the main elements of the design, juxtaposed with vibrant yet flat colours. the effects of all of these elements created a vibrant and busy piece of work, with the intention behind this being to attract new audiences to the theatre who would not.normally visit. The results of this particular piece were a success; it was suggested the piece appealed to a much wider demographic and actually popularised fonts which were at the time rarely used.
